NFPA 2: Hydrogen Technologies Code
A comprehensive review of the core safety requirements for hydrogen production, storage, transfer and use, with the explanatory material needed to apply the code correctly.
Objectives
- Explain the role of NFPA 2 in the safe deployment of hydrogen
- Locate the sections that apply to a given system or facility
- Interpret key requirements and apply them to real projects
Who should attend
- Designers, engineers (mechanical, chemical, fire protection), researchers, technicians and project managers who design, install or maintain hydrogen systems
- Authorities having jurisdiction and safety and health staff responsible for compliance
Course outline
- Fundamentals (Chapters 1–5)
- Administration, references and definitions; general fire safety, permits, emergency plans and training; the performance-based option and the AHJ’s role in approving it.
- General hydrogen requirements (Chapter 6)
- Building design and construction, occupancy classification, control areas, piping and storage conditions for gaseous and liquefied hydrogen.
- Gaseous hydrogen (Chapters 7 and 10)
- System design, installation and control; metal hydride storage; separation distances for bulk and non-bulk systems; hazard area classification; GH2 vehicle fueling facilities.
- Liquefied hydrogen (Chapters 8 and 11)
- Container and system design, piping and valves, separation distances, shutoff and pressure-relief devices; LH2 fueling facilities.
- Fuel cells and generation (Chapters 12–13)
- Stationary, portable and vehicle fuel cell power systems; hydrogen generation systems and electrolyzers.
